FDA Warns Parents of Asbestos Found in Claire's Cosmetics, But Retailer Denies Claims

The FDA released a warning to parents about cancer-causing asbestos found in three Claire's cosmetic products marketed towards children

The FDA warns parents not to buy Claire'due south cosmetics for their children later on the shop's products reportedly tested positive for asbestos.

After the agency first became enlightened of asbestos contamination in certain cosmetic products from Claire's in 2017 (which were later recalled), the FDA continued to "routinely monitor the market for cosmetic products that may pose a public wellness risk," according to its press annunciation. The FDA conducted testing from third political party laboratories, which the agency said revealed that three makeup products tested positive for the cancer-causing asbestos.

The FDA requests that Claire's think the Claire's Center Shadows (Batch No/Lot No: 08/17), Claire'due south Meaty Powder (Batch No/Lot No: 07/fifteen) and Claire's Contour Palette (Batch No/Lot No: 04/17).

Nevertheless, according to the report, "Claire's has refused to comply with the FDA's asking, and the agency does not have authority to mandate a recollect." Because of this, the FDA is sending out an official alert to customers not to use the products on their young children.

Claire'south sent an official statement to PEOPLE, which was as well released on its Twitter account.

"At Claire's, client safety is paramount, and we pride ourselves on providing our customers with the highest quality and safest products. Claire's says it plans to remove any talc-based corrective products and honor any returns.

However, Claire's continues past saying: "There is no evidence that any products sold by Claire's are dangerous. In early 2018, the 3 items identified by the FDA were extensively tested by multiple independent accredited laboratories, and all the products were found to be compliant with all relevant cosmetic safety regulations."

Claire's says the most recent tests conducted past the FDA show "significant errors" because the bureau "mischaracterized fibers in the products as asbestos, in direct contradiction to established EPA and USP criterion for classifying asbestos fibers."

Though the company says they made efforts to discuss these contradictions with the FDA, Claire'due south claims the FDA insisted on moving forward with releasing the alert. "We are disappointed that the FDA has taken this footstep, and we will continue to work with them to demonstrate the safety of our products," Claire'south said.
